Spring Valley’s Dictionary Hill is one of them! This 2.2-mile out-and-back trail is generally considered a moderately challenging route, but it’s worth it for the stunning views of San Diego. The average completion time for the trail is 1 h 8 min, so it’s perfect for a quick hike or a leisurely stroll. either way, you’re sure to enjoy your time on this beautiful trail.
The truth is, Dictionary Hill isn’t its real name. It’s just a nickname acquired about seventy years ago, before there was much of anything out in that area north of Sweetwater Lake. It seems that an enterprising encyclopedia publisher came to San Diego from the Midwest to peddle his wares. Apparently, encyclopedias were something San Diegans could live well enough without, and business was pretty bad. But the publisher came up with what could be the most ingenious marketing idea anyone devised. He bought the area now known as Dictionary Hill and renamed it after his product. The plan worked like a charm. San Diegans were suddenly intrigued by this mysterious hill in their midst, and they flocked to buy the publisher’s encyclopedias. Today, of course, Dictionary Hill is a well-known landmark, and the encyclopedias are long forgotten. But it’s a testament to the power of clever marketing that this place even exists. So next time you’re in Spring Valley, be sure to visit Dictionary Hill Summit!
